DESIGNING SMALL SPACES WITH STYLE

Ark. Brunilda Basha

The spaces we live in are among the most important places for us. They offer the opportunity to create memories, self-expressions and find spiritual, mental and bodily comfort. Designing small spaces requires careful planning and creative solutions to make the most effective use of available space. To make the spaces as functional, pleasant and practical as possible, we need to consider several aspects.

First, planning the spaces themselves is important. Careful planning of spaces is the most important solution. First, we need to evaluate the function of the particular spaces and determine the uses we want to have in each of them. This may include an area for reading, training, working or storing specific objects. When we talk about space, we consider horizontal partitions of the areas, but we also need to be careful about the vertical aspect. One way to use vertical space is to use high shelves that go up to the ceiling. This provides extra space for storing and keeping small things and carries the floor surface free.

Second, choosing the right furniture is equally important. Choose furniture that has dual function, is multifunctional and offers extra space for storing small things. For example, a coffee shop table with drawers or doors under it might be ideal for storing books, magazines or electronic devices. A sofa that can be converted into a bed or a middle table that can be opened and function as a dining table. So we can save space and make the most of each element.

Lighting and colours are also important elements. Lighting and colour have a big impact on the perception of small spaces. Use as much natural lighting as possible, leaving windows open and using thin curtains. Use translucent curtains or curtains that allow light to filter, while maintaining privacy. Avoid blocking windows with large furniture or heavy curtains. Lighter colours on the walls, floors and furniture can make the small space feel wider and more open. Choose neutral or pastel shades that reflect light and create a sense of wide space. If natural lighting is not enough, use LED lighting that creates the perception of a larger space.

Walls can also be used as storage spaces. In small spaces, walls can be used as useful storage spaces. Put shelves on the wall to place books, decorative objects or art, or use wall hangings to display tools or any personal collections. This not only expands the space in a vertical direction, but also adds a sense of personalisation and aesthetics to your surroundings.

Mirrors are also the secret to small space design. Mirrors can create an illusion of depth and visually expand space. Place mirrors on tables, walls or doors to reflect light and the view of the environment. Put a large mirror on a wall or use mirrored doors to make the room look bigger and brighter. This will give the feeling of a more open space and help you have a wider perspective on the available space.

It should not be forgotten that small spaces must be organized and clean. Minimizing unnecessary things and organizing them efficiently will leave enough room for movement and give the feeling of a more important environment. Keep the space clutter-free by using a minimalist approach. Remove unnecessary items and display only a few select pieces that contribute to the overall aesthetic.

Creating visual continuity is also a method that helps design small spaces. Use durable colors for flooring and walls throughout the space to create a visual continuity. This effect can be reinforced even with the use of continuous LED lighting. This helps eliminate visual breaks and gives the illusion of a larger area.

The key to small space design is to be aware of the available space and to find creative solutions to improve functionality without compromising aesthetics. Designing small spaces in your home should not be a challenge. With creativity and good strategy, we can create beautiful, comfortable and functional spaces.
