WALLPAPER AS A CANVAS IN YOUR HOME

 Ar. Brunilda Basha

Home is not a place, home is a feeling, a haven where your soul finds peace. It would be terrible to live in a house where you do not find peace of mind, body and eyes. Home is the place that gathers you around, brings you closer to your family, keeps your secrets, secrets, joys, and happiness. Sometimes it seems as if the walls speak, as if they know many different languages and in every part of the wall, there is a story of that person who lived and lives inside. Walls protect, isolate, separate spaces, but walls also forgive feelings. The walls speak with colors, textures, cracks. Walls have been used as symbols to express unspoken words, difficult characters, curiosities and mysteriousness. Walls speak, but walls also mask.

“Is it her?”

“No. This is a wall.”

“It may be disguised.”

“You’re not very good at looking things up, are you?”

“I’m good at looking for walls. Look, I found another one.”

Derek Landy, Kingdom of the Wicked

The treatment we decide to give to the wall affects the subconscious of everyone’s minds. Many times the wall can speak to our interior, and other times it forces us to feel how it has been treated. For someone, a simple wall, without drawings, without figures, without colors, would be enough to please his eye, to inspire inspiration, to give him peace, as Robert Rauschenberg says: “A blank canvas is full”.

But the wall can also be exactly that canvas where we unfold and unleash our imagination. Because not for every corner a blank wall would be ideal. It could make someone uncomfortable, create discomfort, block the emotional sensation that another, more diverse surface could provoke. “It is very good and yet so terrible to stand in front of a blank canvas” ― Paul Cezanne

Thus, in addition to paintings or engravings of works of art, or perhaps photo frames, another treatment of the wall would be through wall paper. With wall paper we can travel to spaces that we cannot touch. To visit places that we would like to be near, to create the feeling as if we live in another reality. Due to the ease it exhibits in the work, the wall paper can be changed according to our preferences, giving it an added advantage. In this way, within a period of time we can experience many different emotions within a single space.

Wall paper dates back to the 15th century in Europe, while in Asia even earlier. The difference between wall papers produced in Europe and those in Asia was that in Europe they were printed, while in China they were handmade.Traditionally, wallpapers have imitated the expensive life, the things of luxury. Floral motifs, details, paintings began to be applied to furnishings and furniture, and later widely on walls. The motifs of the paper walls were diverse, colorful, classic, oriental, with paintings of birds and different plants, with curved or regular motifs. With the advent of modern times and the dominance of modern architecture, wall paper was seen as a fake treatment and not of high value, because in itself it was an imitation. Moreover, the modern style aimed at minimalism and flat plans without decorations on them.

But, in the last decades, we are seeing a new trend. We are witnessing every day the rapid and massive return of the use of wallpaper. They are applied in different environments of houses or other typologies. It is mainly used in living spaces, such as in the kitchen, in the bedrooms, in the living room or in the dining room. Often a wall treated with wallpaper becomes the most dominant point of the overall space.

The style and type of wall paper can be varied from simple and minimalist, to contemporary, to the treatment of classic and geometric shapes, or perhaps an artistic treatment as if it were a watercolor drawing. Not infrequently, a photo or real picture can be printed as wallpaper to bring more vivid the experience that the user of the space wants to have. I am introducing you to several types and styles of wall paper that you may find suitable for use in areas of the home and to improve the quality of living.

Vintage wall paper refers to the styles that were popular from 1930 to 1980. The elegant style is represented by many designs such as flowers, plants, geometric elements, etc. With the vintage design you can build a fantastic and creative wall page with flowers and their shades.

Another style preferred by many people is the industrial, minimalist and cold style. Through the industrial wall paper you can bring imitation of concrete, bricks, rough material in the interior spaces.

Marble is also a material that everyone would love in their space. For financial reasons, it can easily be imitated through a quality wall paper. Wallpaper with marble patterns creates the appearance of a larger area, can be used with any material, expresses elegance and—most importantly—is available in a wide range of shades and designs.

Another solution could be a wall covered with ceramic tiles with different designs in calm or vibrant color schemes. Whether the tiles are large or small, covering the wall with them creates a three-dimensional effect in the entire space. Therefore, porcelain or ceramic tile design wallpaper would be the best choice if you want to apply a unique design in less time and with less expense.

A different approach and to connect more with nature in your home is a wallpaper with natural designs. Small flowers, large flowers, gorgeous views, tropical looks that make you feel like you’re in the middle of the ocean, and other themes and designs are all possible with natural wall coverings. After a long day at work, you can relax in the comfort of your home, looking at the image that you have selected yourself.
